LETTERS FROM HOME

“The Holy Scriptures are our letters from home.”

Saint Augustine

A Letter from God: Revelation chapter 2: 2-6

I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance.

I know that you cannot tolerate evildoers;

you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not,

and have found them to be false.

I also know that you are enduring patiently

and bearing up for the sake of my name,

and that you have not grown weary.

But I have this against you,

that you have abandoned the love you had at first.

Remember then from what you have fallen;

repent, and do the works you did at first.’ (To Ephesian Christians)

A Letter from God: Isaiah 43:1-5

But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour. Because you are precious in my sight, and honoured, and I love you, Do not fear, for I am with you;

"Love me as you are"

...some thoughts of an anonymous French writer

If you wait to be an angel before you give me your love,

you will never love me.

Love me as you are.

If you want to be perfect before giving me your heart,

you will never love me.

I don’t need your achievements, your gifts, your virtues.

I have not laid down high goals for you.

I created you for the purpose of loving.

In the present moment, therefore,

in these circumstances,

just love me!

Today, I stand at the door of your heart as a beggar.

I knock and wait.

Do not make your misery an excuse,

your misery is my excuse for loving you more!

Believe me,

trust me,

love me;

this is all I ask,

I will do the rest.

When doubt,

or suffering,

or temptation come your way,

remember me and call on me;

"I am with you.”

Try to make the “Glory to the Father…”

a real part of your way of life.

Say it slowly every day;

Live it in such a way that your life glorifies God.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning,

is now, and shall be for ever. Amen.
