Magnificat of a Chilean Woman
With pride and dignity I sing my song of joy when I feel the Lord's presence.
I am poor and very ordinary, but one day the Lord looked upon me, and turned my poverty to spiritual riches.
God is unfettered and unpredictable, our great friend.
And throughout our history we have been favoured,
those of us who are weak;
this triumphant force shows itself each day when He exposes the foolishness of the powerful.
God uncovers the feet of clay of those in power, and nourishes the yearning of the poor.
To those who come hungry God gives bread and wine. And to the wealthy God exposes their selfishness and the emptiness of their ways.
This is God's desire: to favour the poor. Now finally we can walk with freedom.
God is faithful.
"In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessèd are you among women, and blessèd is the fruit of your womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leaped for joy." Luke chapter 1
“The Word that took root in the darkness of Mary’s womb,
that took flesh and walked around in this world,
that emerged not only in the labouring of a woman
but also in the labouring of generations to follow,
the ancient Word that springs forth anew—
this Word seeks to dwell deeply in us,
to be born into the world through us in this and every season.”
Jan Richardson, “The Luminous Word”
O God, for whom we long as a woman in labour longs for her delivery; give us the courage to wait,
and the strength and discernment to know the right time; that we might each bring into the world
your joyful peace through Jesus Christ. Amen. Janet Morley
