SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

HOLY TRINITY WINCHESTER - 12th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - 21st JUNE 2020

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.

See if there is any offensive way in me,

and lead me in the way everlasting.

Create in me a pure heart, O God,

and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

Psalms 139 and 51

A brief pause for silence follows

I confess to almighty God

that I have greatly sinned,

in my thoughts and in my words,

in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,

through my fault, through my fault,

through my most grievous fault;

therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin,

and all the Angels and Saints,

to pray for me to the Lord our God.

May almighty God have mercy on us,

forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen.

THE GLORIA

Glory to God in the highest,

and on earth peace to people of good will.

We praise you, we bless you, we adore you,

we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory,

Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father.

Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son,

Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,

you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us;

you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer;

you are seated at the right hand of the Father,

have mercy on us.

For you alone are the Holy One,

you alone are the Lord,

you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ,

with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

COLLECT FOR TODAY

Grant, O Lord, that we may always revere and love your holy name, for you never deprive of your guidance those you set firm on the foundation of your love. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

FIRST READING Jeremiah 20:10-13

The Lord is at my side, a mighty hero;

my opponents will stumble, mastered,

confounded by their failure;

everlasting, unforgettable disgrace will be theirs.

But you, O Lord of Hosts, you who probe with justice,

who scrutinize the loins and heart,

let me see the vengeance you will take on them,

for I have committed my cause to you.

Sing to the Lord,

praise the Lord,

for he has delivered the soul of the needy

from the hands of evil people.

THE RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Psalm 69

Lord, in your great love, answer me.

For your sake I bear insult, and shame covers my face. I have become an outcast to my brothers, a stranger to my children, because zeal for your house consumes me, and the insults of those who blaspheme you fall upon me.

Lord, in your great love, answer me.

I pray to you, O LORD, for the time of your favour, O God! In your great kindness answer me with your constant help.Answer me, O Lord, for bounteous is your kindness; in your great mercy turn toward me.

Lord, in your great love, answer me.

"See, you lowly ones, and be glad; you who seek God, may your hearts revive! For the Lord hears the poor, and his own who are in bonds he spurns not. Let the heavens and the earth praise him, the seas and whatever moves in them!"

Lord, in your great love, answer me.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION John15:26,27

Alleluia, alleluia!

The Spirit of truth will be my witness;

and you too will be my witnesses.

Alleluia!

GOSPEL Matthew 10:26-33

Jesus instructed the Twelve as follows:

‘Do not be afraid.

For everything that is now covered

will be uncovered,

and everything now hidden

will be made clear.

What I say to you in the dark,

tell in the daylight;

what you hear in whispers,

proclaim from the housetops.

‘Do not be afraid of those who kill the body

but cannot kill the soul;

fear him rather who can destroy

both body and soul in hell.

Can you not buy two sparrows for a penny?

And yet not one falls to the ground

without your Father knowing.

Why, every hair on your head has been counted.

So there is no need to be afraid;

you are worth more than hundreds of sparrows.

‘So if anyone declares himself for me

in the presence of men,

I will declare myself for him

in the presence of my Father in heaven.

But the one who disowns me in the presence of men,

I will disown in the presence of my Father in heaven.’

HOMILY

The litmus-test for Christian orthodoxy is not the creed

but the challenge from Jesus: "Can you love an enemy"?

Can you avoid giving back in kind?

Can you move beyond your natural reactions

so as to not give back bitterness for bitterness,

harsh words for harsh words,

curse for curse,

hatred for hatred,

murder for murder?

Can you rise above your sense of being wronged?

Can you renounce your need to be right?

Can you move beyond the itch to always have what’s due you?

Can you forgive, even when every feeling inside of you rebels at its unfairness?

Can you take in bitterness, curses, hatred, and murder itself,

and give back graciousness, blessing, love, understanding, and forgiveness?

That’s the root invitation inside of Christianity

and it’s only when we do this that we move beyond “an eye for an eye”,

and THAT is what marks out a Christian. Father Ron Rolheiser

Peter Scholtes, who wrote the hymn

"They Will Know We Are Christians by Our Love", was parish priest at St. Brendan's in downtown Chicago in the 1960s. Heavily involved at the time in the Chicago Civil Rights Movement,

he was looking for an appropriate song for a series of ecumenical, interracial events. When he couldn't find such a song, he wrote this in a single day,

and it succinctly sums-up that it is loving behaviour that marks out true Christian discipleship.

"We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord And we pray that our unity will one day be restored And they'll know we are Christians by our love, by our love They will know we are Christians by our love

We will work with each other, we will work side by side We will work with each other, we will work side by side And we'll guard each one's dignity and save each one's pride And they'll know we are Christians by our love, by our love

They will know we are Christians by our love."

THE NICENE CREED

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Meditation and Prayer

I asked God to take away my bad habit.

God said, No.

It is not for me to take away, but for you to give it up.

I asked God to grant me patience.

God said, No.

Patience is a by-product of tribulations; it isn’t granted, it is learned.

I asked God to give me happiness.

God said, No.

I give you blessings; Happiness is up to you.

I asked God to spare me pain.

God said, No.

Sufferings draws you apart from worldly cares,

and brings you closer to me.

I asked God to make my spirit grow.

God said, No.

You must grow on your own; but I will prune you to make you fruitful.

I asked God for all things that I might enjoy life.

God said, No.

I will give you life, so that you may enjoy all things.

I asked God to help me LOVE others, as much as He loves me.

God said…Ahhhh, finally you have the idea.

“Grant me, Lord,

A simple heart,

Which never harbours sorrows;

A heart glorious in self-giving,

Tender in compassion;

A heart faithful and generous

Which will never forget any good

Or bear a grudge for any evil.

Make me a heart gentle and humble

Loving without asking any return,

Large-hearted and undauntable,

Which no ingratitude can sour

And no indifference can weary;

A heart penetrated by the love of Jesus

Whose desire will only be

Satisfied in the things of heaven.

Grant me, Lord,

The mind and heart of your Son.” George Appleton

I ask that Mary might add her prayers to mine for all for whom I pray:

Hail Mary, full of grace,

the Lord is with thee,

blessed art thou among women,

and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God,

pray for us sinners now,

and at the hour of our death.

Gracious God,

Father, Son and Holy Spirit,

help me to do all things

for the greater good of all people;

I offer you my thoughts, words, deeds and all that I am.

Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son

our Saviour Jesus Christ.

SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

A New Heart - Fr Jean Galot, SJ.

Make still whatever in me is not you:

Impose silence on my desires, my whims,

my dreams of escape, the violence of my passions.

Cover with your silence the voice of my complaints.

Impregnate with your silence

my nature too impatient to speak,

too inclined to exterior and noisy action.

Take me into your silence, Lord,

far from the noise and the agitation of the world.

Into a silence where my being finds itself in its truth,

in its nakedness, in its poverty,

because this silence allows me

to discover my very self.

Sit for a moment in silence

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God;

It is right and just. It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God. For with your Only Begotten Son and the Holy Spirit you are one God, one Lord: not in the unity of a single person, but in a Trinity of one substance. For what you have revealed to us of your glory we believe equally of your Son and of the Holy Spirit, so that, in the confessing of the true and eternal Godhead, you might be adored in what is proper to each Person, their unity in substance, and their equality in majesty.

For this is praised by Angels

and Archangels, Cherubim, too, and Seraphim, who never cease to cry out each day, as with one voice they acclaim:

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth

are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. ✠ Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

At the Saviour’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say:

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come,thy will be done

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days,that, by the help of your mercy,

we may be always free from sin

and safe from all distress,as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and for ever.

Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your Apostles: peace I leave you, my peace I give you,look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church, and graciously grant her peace and unity

in accordance with your will.

Who live and reign for ever and ever.

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,

have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,

have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,

grant us peace.

Time to sit quietly to receive the Lord’s Presence spiritually.

“My Jesus,

I believe that You are present

in the Most Holy Sacrament

of the altar.

I love You above all things,

and I desire to receive You

into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment

receive You sacramentally,

come at least spiritually

into my heart …

I embrace You

as if You were already there

and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me

to be separated from You,”

The Grail Prayer The Grail Community

Lord Jesus, I give you my hands to do your work. I give you my feet to go your way. I give you my eyes to see as you do. I give you my tongue to speak your words. I give you my mind that you may think in me. I give you my spirit that you may pray in me. Above all, I give you my heart that you may love in me your Father and all mankind. I give you my whole self that you may grow in me, so that it is you, Lord Jesus, who live, and work, and pray in me. Amen.

ASKING GOD’S BLESSING

God the Holy Trinity make us strong in faith and love,

defend us on every side,

and guide us in truth and peace;

and may the blessing ✠ of Almighty God,

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

be upon us, and remain with us always.

THE ANGELUS

The angel of the Lord brought tidings unto Mary. And she conceived by the Holy Ghost.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women

and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now,

and at the hour of our death.

Behold the handmaid of the Lord. Be it unto me according to thy word.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women

and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now,

and at the hour of our death.

And the Word was made flesh. And dwelt amongst us.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women

and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now,

and at the hour of our death.

Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray. We beseech thee, O Lord, pour thy grace into our hearts,

that as we have known the Incarnation of thy Son Jesus Christ

by the message of an angel, so by his Cross and Passion

we may be brought unto the glory of his Resurrection;

through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Let us bless the Lord.

Thanks be to God!
